Hormone Replacement Therapy for Guys

Are testosterone and growth hormone the fountain of youth for aging men? “I consider what I do aggressive prevention, the basis of which is metabolism modulation,” Dr. Florence Comite says. “Twenty years from now, this will be the standard of care.” But "standard of care" to some means "quackery" to others. "If anyone is arguing that this is the new medical profession or the way things are going to be done 20 years from now, I would say they’re drinking the Kool-Aid of the antiaging industry,” says Dr. Jay Olshansky. “They’re making money selling a repackaged version of traditional preventive medicine, and then they add some hormones and supplements. It’s just such a racket.” There's more in The New York Times Magazine.

I am not sure how I feel about this article. I work out a lot, watch my diet and do everything under the sun to maintain optimal health, and therefore there is something attractive about this particular option being on the table. At the same time, the story highlights how this industry is simply feeding into mid-life crisis market for former jocks that let their own personal health slide, and now cannot face the turmoil of aging. I see these men at every gym I attend; wearing their [soccer, basketball, tennis] club shirts and talking up the body builders about squats and dumbbell flies. I am all for a person attaining a better level of personal fitness but this desperate fixation on youth comes across as rather sad.

I doubt Dr. Comite’s assertion that hormone therapy for men will become the standard of care, however. There seems to be a lot of uncertainty regarding the consequences of testosterone and HCG injections, with a very blurry line distinguishing the ‘health benefits’ and ‘health dangers’ for both treatments. Adding in the exorbitant costs of maintaining these treatments is also problematic. Dr. Comite’s clients, and patients like them, appear to be very happy with their results, and there is no question that there will continue to be a customer base to support this industry. I am skeptical, however, that an industry that caters only to wealthy, youth-obsessed professional men will set the pace for standards of care in the U.S. (and elsewhere).

I think Cenegenics is on to something. Their product offering eternal youth must be seen as legitimately effective, the $3,500 price tag is a testament to its value. This is especially true once one views the testimonials complete with asterisks in the ad, and multiple comments on what the results "may" be. The ads nearby for the upside down tomato tree, spy pen, and marshmallow shooter - all within the pages of "Skymall" are bonuses which help support Cenegenics credibility as a necessary, and positively life altering tool for the middle aged male.

Very low quality evidence suggests that sex reassignment that includes hormonal interventions in individuals with GID likely improves gender dysphoria, psychological functioning and comorbidities, sexual function and overall quality of life.
